Jacob Summers and Margaret Faust's Family
(mid 1700's)

Jacob Summers was born in 1710 near the Rhine River and Ober Rexbach in Germany. He met Margaret Faust, born in 1720 and married her in 1751 in Germany. Soon after they were married they sailed for America aboard the Ship "Neptune". They reached Philadelphia Sept. 24th, 1751.

They must of been very happy, being in a new land with a new baby on the way, Sometime late 1751, a little girl was born. They named her Faith. Another little girl named Hope was born in 1754. With all their belief in God to reach there destination, the two little girls were an everlasting reminder of the hope, faith and courage they displayed on their journey from Philadelphia, through Virginia into North Carolina. Finally settling in the Reedy Fork area of Guilford County. Jacob and a number of other families built a small church they called Friedens.

On May 16th, 1757, the Summers family rejoiced the birth of their first son. Since Jacob's father's name was Peter Summers and Margaret Father's name was Peter Faust, they saw it only fitting to name their son Peter.

In 1768, another son was born. His name was Valentine. When he grew up he married a girl named Catherine. They had 5 children: Jacob; Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary and Sarah. Valentine died in 1853 and Catherine died in 1824.

Another son, named John, was born in 1780. He married a pretty girl named Mary Shephard. They had one son named Martin. Mary died and John married Polly Osborn. They had 15 children, three boys and 12 girls. John died in 1836. Martin married a girl named Elizabeth Cobb.

When Peter grew up, he served with the First North Carolina Battalion in the Revolutionary War (Volumes XIV-XVII of the NC Historical Records; also Volume II of Moul tries Memoirs). It was during that time he became know as "Capitan Peter Summers". He was with President Washington when he visited the grounds on the Battle of Guilford County Court House of the year 1837.

There are several spellings in the Summers, Somers, Sumers, name--originally it was spelled "Sohmers" which is German.

Capitan Peter Summers was married 4 times. First to Rosa who died at 27 years, 11 months and 21 days; second to Barbara who died at the age of 24 years, 1 month and 7 days; third was to Elizabeth Cable who died at the age 36 years and 20 days; and the fourth to Philippina, from Salem, NC. She died at the age of 28 years, 9 months and 15 days. All four wives are buried beside Captain Peter in the Friedens Cemetery. He died Aug. 17th, 1837. It has been told that Captain Peter said that he had known he was going to live so long after Philppina died, he would have married again. He and his wives had 9 children. Jacob married Jane Gerringer; Margaret married Boston Gerringer; Peter married Barbara Gerringer; Abel married Margaret Finley; Joshua married Frances Sockwell; Rosa married Jacob Clapp; Barbara married John Boon; and Lucy married David Clapp.

Jacob and his brother Ludwick sold some land in Guilford County. Ludwick signed his name "Summers" and Jacob signed his name "Somers". Maybe this explains why we have two separate spellings for the same family.

Jacob and Jane moved to Almance County in 1831 near the present location of Western Almance High School. They had 12 children: Andrew married Martha Doggett; Georhe married Sarah Faucette; Hezekiah married Susan Benson; Boston married Elizabeth Hicks; Alfred married Sarah Mimms, She later married Mandel Rice; Elias married Margaret P. Summers; Jacob Jr. married Mary Ann Hannah; Margaret married Noble Cryor; Catherine married George Faucette; Peter, Rozanah, and Elizabeth.

Jacob Jr. was born June 7, 1812, and died July 11, 1904. Mary Ann was born Feb. 17, 1811 and died Feb. 5, 1897. They are buried in Stoney Creek Cemetery in Alamance County. To this union was born 9 children between the years 1837-1852; Nancy married Nathaniel Reid; John Henry Pickard was missing in the Civil War; Mary Elizabeth married Rice Gwynn; Rosana Ellen never married; Samuel Washington was killed in the Civil War; Susan Isabelle married Pink Hornbuckle; Jacob Frank married Mary Alice Whitt; William Paisley married Susan Olevia Primrose Kernodle; Lovenia married Thomas A. Tate.

Shellie,

I'm trying to determine if Barbara Summers was married twice... From Brick Church Records - transcribed by Rev. D. I. Offman: Anthony Coble, son of Anthony Coble, Sr. , and Maria Barbara Sommers, daughter of Peter Sommers, were married May 31,1803. This Barbara appears to be the widow of Anthony Coble mentioned in Capt Peter's 1825 will. Your site shows: JOHN BOON married BARBARA SUMMERS 1800, daughter of CAPTAIN PETER SUMMERS. She was born October 10, 1778 in Guilford County, North Carolina, and died July 10, 1833 in Orange County, North Carolina. Are these dates from her tombstone? I show the Barbara, daughter of Capt Peter and Rosina Clapp Summers, was b. May 28, 1788, and would have been only 12 in 1800, and am wondering which date is correct -- or if this is the same Barbara. I'd appreciate any guidance you can provide.

PS: This article has some glaring errors that should be noted: Margaret Faust was 60 years old when John Summers, who m. (1) Mrs. Betsey Sheaver aka Mary Shepherd and (2) Polly Osborne, was born in 1780 -- and not likely his mother. Also, she was 48 when Valentine Summers was born in 1768 -- which is possible; however, in 1850, he says he was born in Stokes County (then Rowan, but not the part that became Guilford) raising the question of his parentage. He and John may be brothers, or cousins, and perhaps grandchildren of Jacob and Margaret...but probably not sons.
