History of George Summers

George Summers was born 28 March 1848 in Morganton, Georgia to Thomas E. Summers and Marry Endsly.

He married Adaline Bramblett (born 23 June 1842 to Reuban E. and Sarah Bramblett) on 3 Jan. 1869 in Dalton, Georgia. There they began their family. George and Adaline moved to Missouri in 1871. They traveled to St. Louis then took a steamer up the Mississippi River and continued on their way. They Homesteaded a place 7 1/2 miles east of West Plains, Howell County, Missouri. They must of been excited to move to Missouri because their second child is named Missouri. She would of been born shortly before leaving for Missouri.

Born to this union are: Eanses V. Summers Born 6 Oct. 1869, Missouri W. Summers born 25 Feb 1871, Anna Mary 30 Sept. born 1872, J A Summers born 7 march 1874, Janie P. Summers born 5 march 1876, Frank Summers born 30 April 1877, Florence Summers born 9 Nov 1879, Ednie Summers born 12 Oct. 1880, William Summers born 12 Feb 1882, and Maggie Summers born 19 May 1885.

Adaline died 16 July 1885. The oldest, Eanses was 16 and the youngest was 2 months old. In 1886 George married Sarah Frances Hopkins. Born to this union was Birthy Summers born 28 Aug 1887 Lloyd Summers born 6 Aug 1888, Calie Summers born23 July 1891 and Thomas B. Summers born 14 Sept. 1893. Sarah raised Adaline's children along with her own.

George Summers, a pioneer resident of the county, was highly thought of. The land the he homesteaded was is Summers district, named after him. He served on many committees, he took part in most community projects, served on the school board for many years, a member of the Baptist church and was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge. Story has it that he was also an informal Judge who helped solve disputes.

He died 31 March 1934, 86 years old, in his home.
