William Nutt I

William Nutt owned nearly 831 acres in Orange County, Virginia and he operated at least three grist mills on his property there.  Deed records in Augusta County, Virginia show William Nutt purchased land here as early as 1747.  The land is located about four miles south of where Staunton ,Virginia is located today.  By September 21, 1751, Land records show William Nutt and his family living in Anson County, North Carolina.

Anson County was named in honor of British Admiral Lord GEorge Anson, a First Lord of Admiralty.  He commanded the vessel which brought Princess Charlotte og Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, to her future husband King George III.  Germans emigrated to the area around Anson County, as did settlers from the British Isles, Africa and Moravia.  In 1750, Anson County was formed out of Bladen County (at the time extended to the Mississippi River).

The area William Nutt and his family settled in was along the Waxhaw and Twelve mile Creek which is now in Meclenburg County (formed from Anson County 1762).
